Most people know they should not paste sensitive information directly into an AI prompt.

Customer records, passwords, financial information, and confidential documents are obvious examples of data that should stay out of AI tools. Unfortunately, there’s another risk many employees overlook: Screenshots.

As AI tools become better at understanding images, more people are uploading screenshots to ask questions, troubleshoot problems, summarize information, or generate content.

It feels safe because you share a picture instead of a document. Unfortunately, a screenshot can reveal far more information than you realize.

Imagine that you’re struggling with a software application. Instead of typing out a lengthy explanation, you realize that you can take a screenshot and simply ask AI:

“Can you help me understand this error message?”

Or perhaps you want help responding to an email, so you upload a screenshot of the conversation and ask:

“How should I reply?”

These seem like perfectly reasonable uses of AI. The problem is that the screenshot often contains much more than the information you intended to share.

Modern AI tools can analyze text, images, tables, forms, and other details within a picture.

That means AI may be able to see:

  • Customer names
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Account numbers
  • Financial information
  • Internal company communications
  • Project details
  • Usernames and login information

What looks like a simple image to you, may actually contain a large amount of sensitive information.

The biggest risk is often not the main content of the screenshot, but everything else around it.

For example, a screenshot of an error message may also capture:

  • Open browser tabs
  • Email notifications
  • Customer records
  • Internal chat messages
  • Calendar appointments

A screenshot of a spreadsheet may reveal confidential data in adjacent rows or columns that were never meant to be shared.

Even something as simple as a desktop screenshot can expose sensitive information sitting in the background.

Many people use AI to help improve communication. For example, people commonly take a screenshot of an email and then ask AI to write an appropriate response.

The issue is that email conversations often contain information such as customer names, project details, pricing discussions, or internal business decisions.

The user may only want help drafting a reply, but the screenshot gives the AI access to the entire conversation. In some cases, that means unnecessarily sharing sensitive information.

Before uploading a screenshot to an AI tool, take a moment to review it carefully. Ask yourself:

  • Does this image contain any personal information?
  • Are there customer details visible?
  • Is there anything confidential in the background?
  • Am I sharing more than necessary?

In many situations, you can achieve the same result by describing the issue instead of uploading the image.

If a screenshot is necessary, then consider removing or censoring sensitive information before sharing it.

Screenshots have become one of the fastest ways to communicate information. That convenience makes them easy to overlook from a security perspective.

Many people focus on the specific problem they are trying to solve and never stop to consider everything else that appears in the image.

Sometimes the biggest risk is not what you intended to share, but everything you accidentally included in the picture as well. So the next time you are about to upload a screenshot to an AI tool, pause and take a closer look first!
